Abstract

Cellulose xanthates, making filaments and other articles from, processes for.-Threads and other articles are prepared from viscose solution in a fresh or only slightly matured and impurified condition. As precipitating baths, dilute acids (containing for example less than 5 per cent of sulphuric acid), or strong salt solutions of density greater than 18‹ B., may be used, and the threads are given an extended travel at least 10 cm. through the bath. Acids, up to 10 per cent of sulphuric acid or acid salts such as aluminium sulphate, may be added to the salt solutions. Alcohols, metallic salts, or organic substances such as the nitroso bases, referred to in U.S. Specification 1,143,569, for preventing deposition of sulphur on the threads, may be added to the precipitating baths. In examples, clear threads are formed by precipitating in a 2.5-3 per cent sulphuric acid bath, with a distance for precipitation of 25-30 cms. and a take-up speed of 40 ms. per minute, and artificial silk is made by precipitating in a solution of sodium and ammonium sulphates of a density of at least 22‹ B., containing 2-3 per cent of hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, and at a temperature of 35-50‹ C.
