Abstract

A method of producing a laminate for use as a fluted layer or a liner layer in a corrugated board comprises forming a substantially uniform intermediate layer of a thermosetting resin containing a plasticizer between two webs of paper or paperboard, and bonding the webs and resin layer to each other without impregnating the webs with the resin so that the surfaces of the laminate thus formed are still capable of being glued with water-miscible paper and paperboard glues, and without completely hardening the resin to form a laminate which is mouldable after a period of storage. The webs may be of wet strength paper or paperboard in which the wet strength is provided by cationic urea formaldehyde and optionally alum. The laminate may be used as the fluted layer of a corrugated board between liners of the same laminate of or any of the following:-wet strength paper or paperboard, wax-coated paper or paperboard, foamed plastics or foamed plastics covered with wet strength paper. The thermosetting resin used in the laminate may be a urea resin containing polyvinyl acetate as a softener and ammonium chloride, water, and concentrated ammonia as hardener or a phenolic resin. The resin may be applied as a film, as a solution or dispersion, by extrusion or as a powder or in the case of phenolic resin as an impregnant in a thin paper sheet. The bonding of the surface layers of paper or paperboard by the resin is carried out under non-resin hardening conditions, e.g. between press rolls. The laminate when used as a fluted layer may be glued to liner layer(s) by water base glues, e.g. dextrines, or water-resistant glues, e.g. urea, phenolic, or resorcinolic resins. The thermosetting resin is finally hardened by subjecting the corrugated board to a heat treatment.
