Abstract
1,162,055. Microwave heating. N. B. AGDUR, and P. O. G. HEDVALL. 5 Oct., 1967 [19 Oct., 1966], No. 45689/67. Heading H5H. A corrugated waveguide is used for microwave heating. The microwave structure comprises an array of elements 14 with corresponding points spaced by a distance smaller than half the free-space wavelength of the microwaves such that the microwaves propagate along the structure with a phase velocity smaller than the free-space velocity and the microwave energy is concentrated in the structure itself and a narrow adjoining region where the material to be heated is placed, see Figs. 2-5 (not shown). A strip of material to be heated is passed through slit-shaped quarter wavelength chokes 16 in vertical metal plates 15 and immediately over the elements 14, which may be corrugations or of T-shaped cross-section as shown, the elements 14 being of metal and mounted on a metal base-plate 13. Energy absorbers 17 comprising glass tubes with water circulating therethrough are placed adjacent plates 15. The input waveguide 10 has a coupling loop 11 connected to an element 14, and the input waveguide 10 may be circular, Fig. 7 (not shown), in which case the elements 74 are in concentric circular arrays. The elements may alternatively be in a two-dimensional array, Fig. 6 (not shown), or located on a curved surface 82, 83 over which is passed a paper web 89 to be dried, Fig. 8 (not shown). The invention is used for drying paper, pulp, cellulose products, wood, glue, dyes &c., or for heating, boiling and frying foodstuffs.
