Abstract
1,161,737. Positive clutches. BROOM & WADE Ltd. 23 Nov., 1966 [6 Dec., 1965], No. 51690/65. Heading F2C. A positive clutch is released centrifugally and remains released until reassembled manually. It is used as a safety device between an air motor and a grinding wheel and is operative to cut off drive to the wheel in the event of excessive speed of the motor due to failure of its governor. The clutch comprises a driving member 18 having teeth 180 and having a ball spline connection 23 with a driving shaft 16 and urged by a spring 32 into engagement with teeth 190 of a driven member 19. Centrifugal balls 26 are normally housed partly in pockets 28 in the driving shaft and partly in slots defined by converging surfaces 30, 33 provided on the clutch members 18, 19. At excessive speeds the balls ride out of the slot in the member 18, shifting this member to its released position, the balls then co-operating with a radial end surface of the member 18 or a surface diverging from the surface 33 so that the balls are retained in their release position by the spring 32 until the clutch has been dismantled and reassembled.
