Abstract

1,161,755. Making films containing fillers; laminates. BOFORS TIDAHOLMSVERKEN A.B. 29 June, 1966 [29 June, 1965], No. 29282/66. Headings B5B and B5N. [Also in Division C3] Plastics films are made by casting a layer of partially polymerized material in liquid form and, while the layer is substantially coherent but still sufficiently soft, allowing powdered filler to fall on to the layer and to sediment within it. Fillers mentioned are zircon sand, a mixture of iron and chromium oxides, silicon carbide, alumina, talc, labrador sand (containing feldspars, fluorite, magnetite, biotite, apatite and other minerals) and metal powder. The filler may contain organic or inorganic pigments. Suitable polymers are polyester, epoxy and acrylic resins. Different fillers can be used in combination to give decorative or durable finishes and expensive fillers can be used sparingly. Particle sizes up to 5 mm. are mentioned. The filler may be confined to the surface region. If the resin contains silicone oil, which lowers the surface tension, a more even distribution of the filler can be obtained. With an increased quantity of silicone oil a decorative uneven distribution can be obtained. The filler may be added in several stages using the same or different fillers. The filler is preferably applied from a movable screen and on its way to the film may pass through one or more sieves. A reinforcement may be applied to the finished film and a further film deposited over the reinforcement. A completed film can be laminated to a base e.g. a sheet of foamed plastic, a honeycomb member, light concrete or wood fibre slab. In an example a glass sheet coated with lecithin in styrene (mould release agent) is coated with a partially polymerized unsaturated polyester mixture containing 0À5- 1% of a silicone oil, 1-2% methylethyl ketone peroxide catalyst and 0À2% of a cobalt naphthenate accelerator with 6% cobalt content. When the layer reaches a viscosity of 100-200 cp. at 25‹ C. a filler of zircon sand of grain size 0À15-0À2 mm. is sifted on to the layer, passing through two sieves of 1 mm. and 2 mm. aperture on the way. After a twenty-second pause a second deposit of sand is made and this procedure is repeated to a total of six applications. After hardening for 30 minutes the 0À5 mm. layer receives a glass fibre mat reinforcement on which a second layer of polyester filled with zircon sand is laid as before, providing a finished reinforced sheet about 2 mm. thick.
