Abstract
1,161,742. Supercharged engines; starting; turbines. W.G. LUNDQUIST. Sept.7, 1966 [Sept. 21, 1965], No.40059/66. Headings F1B, F1K and F1T. A blower impeller 17 is driven from the crank-shaft through gearing 9, 10, and a shaft 12 forming a relatively rigid drive connection whilst the engine output shaft 19 is splined to shaft 12 at 20 and forms a relatively less torsionally rigid connection, whereby the impeller 17 acts as the engine flywheel. A second drive may be taken off the crank-shaft through connection 31. In Fig. 3 shaft 12 is connected to gear 10 through a hydraulically actuated clutch 40 which, on disengagement, permits the impeller 17 to be driven up to speed at starting and then clutched in to turn over the engine. The impeller may be driven at starting by an electric motor or, as shown, by compressed air supplied at 51 and delivered through slots 52 in the tips of the compressor blades. The air discharged from the blower 17 at starting may be fed to the engine through passage 53 or discharged through valve 54.
