Abstract
1,161,668. Sulphonate esters. GEIGY (U.K.) Ltd. 6 Jan., 1967 [8 Jan., 1966], No. 973/66. Heading C2C. Sulphonate esters having the formula wherein X represents an alkyl group or the group -(CH 2 ) 3 SO 3 M, M represents an atom of an alkali metal and -OOCRCOO- is either an aliphatic dicarboxylate group, R representing the group -(CH 2 ) n wherein n has any value from 0 to 10, or is an aromatic dicarboxylate group, may be prepared by reacting propanesultone either with an alkali metal salt of a dicarboxylic acid or with an alkali metal salt of the half-ester of a dicarboxylic acid, the salt having the Formula (II) MOOCRCOOY wherein Y is an atom of an alkali metal or an alkyl group. Examples of (II) are the mono- and-disodium and potassium salts of oxalic adipic, sebacic and dodecane-1,12-dioic acids and the sodium and potassium salts of the butyl or octyl half-esters of succinic or phthalic acids. The process may be carried out in an inert organic solvent, preferably at a temperature between 75‹ and 250‹ C., wherein the proportion of propanesultone to solvent is from 5-40% by weight, and the proportion of propanesultone to (II) is within the range of up to 10% by weight in excess of the stoichiometric equivalent.
