Abstract
1,161,661. Anaerobic curing adhesives. BORDEN CHEMICAL CO. (U.K.) Ltd. 22 Dec., 1966 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 163/66. Addition to 1,090,753. Heading C3P. Anaerobic curing compositions comprise a monomer (or a partial polymer thereof) of the formula where R is -H, -CH 3 , -C 2 H 5 , -CH 2 OH or X and Y are integers each equal to at least 1 and n is 0 or 1, an organic peroxide (other than a hydroperoxide) having a half-life (as defined) greater than 5 hours at 100‹ C., and an organic acid or an anhydride, imide or amide thereof, the composition being free from water. The compositions may also include an amine, particularly an aromatic tertiary amine. Monomers specified are diacrylates and dimethacrylates of diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, diglycerol and di-(pentamethylene) glycol, and diglycerol tetramethacrylate; esters of ethacrylic or chloroacrylic acid, e.g. tetraethylene glycol dichloracrylate, are also suitable. Suitable peroxides include 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di-(tbutyl peroxy)-hexane, di-t-butyl peroxide, dihexylene glycol peroxide, t-butyl cumyl peroxide, methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide and 2,5 - diethyl - 2,5 - di - (t - butylperoxy)-hexane. As the organic acid (or derivative thereof) there are mentioned benzoic acid, p-toluic acid, naphthoic acid, naphthylacetic acid, phthalic acid and their anhydrides, methacrylic acid, p - toluene-sulphonamide, methylene - bis -acrylamide, phthalimide and saccharin. The compositions may also contain a thickener, e.g. polyvinyl acetate. The compositions are suitable for bonding metal surfaces, particularly in systems such as nuts and bolts.
