Abstract

1,161,512. Polymerization. COLUMBIAN CARBON CO. 30 Aug., 1966 [1 Sept., 1965], No. 38720/66. Addition to 1,161,511. Heading C3P. The process of Specification 1,161,511 for the polymerization of organic monomers in the presence of catalysts comprising (a) a Group IA of IIA metal or an organometallic compound or hydride thereof and (b) an organo compound of a Group IIIA element, in a molar ratio of (b) to (a) of less than 1 to 1; is improved in that components (a) and (b) are premixed and subjected to a temperature of 20‹ to 250‹ C. before subjecting the monomer to the action of the catalyst under polymerizing conditions. Preferred monomers are olefinically unsaturated compounds, and many suitable monomers and catalyst components are specified. Examples describe the copolymerization of butadiene, vinyl toluene and optionally isobutylene in hexane in the presence of catalysts comprising sodium, potassium or lithium and triethyl aluminium or diethyl aluminium chloride.
