Abstract

1,161,560. Spray-producers; evaporation of phthalic anhydride. POLYCARBONA CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 31 Aug., 1966, No. 38921/66. Headings BIB and B2F. Spray producers. Apparatus suitable for use in the spray evaporation or treatment of solutions, suspensions or emulsions comprises a pair of rotatable cooperating discs 31, 32 interconnected adjacent their peripheries by a plurality of webs or vanes 33, the front face of each web in the direction of rotation of the discs being substantially vertical or slightly inclined forwardly and directed rearwardly at an angle greater than 91‹ to a tangent to the discs at the respective web, and the outer face of each web being substantially vertical and being substantially parallel to the said tangent or being directed rearwardly at an angle of up to 10‹, whereby the front and outer faces meet to form an acute-angled cutting edge. The horizontal clearance between adjacent webs at right angles to the radius is equal to or up to twice the length of the web in the radial direction and the rear face of each web is substantially parallel to its front face. The distance between the discs 31, 32 at their peripheries is equal to or up to twice the clearance between adjacent webs. Preferably the front face of each web is at an angle of from 121‹-170‹ to the respective tangent..The spray material is fed between the discs through a stationary pipe 37 which surrounds the drive shaft 34 of the discs and terminates at from 5-20 m.m. above the lower disc 31. The pipe 37 is secured in a gas-tight manner at its top and is fed .by a pipe 35 loosely mounted within a connection 36 at an angle of about 45‹ with respect to the horizontal. A ring 38 is mounted on the drive shaft below the level of the material inlet. Large quantities of material may be treated with the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown) which provides axially separated rotary distributors (61), (62) on a common drive shaft (62). Separate material inlets are provided for each distributor. Figs. 1-3a (not shown) depict rotary distributors which are stated to be known. Spray Evaporators Fig. 5 depicts a cylindrical evaporator tower suitable for the spray evaporation of. phthalic anhydride, said tower containing a rotatable distributor 54 according to the invention. The residue is pushed into a water-filled shaft 47 by a scraper 45. The .residue free from phthalic acid anhydride floats on the water and is passed by conveyers 50 to a drainage pit 51 or into a perforated container. Numeral 53 denotes a heating jacket; 55 depicts means for .removing the carrier gas, such as nitrogen.
