A rotary printing press comprises a pair of spaced side frames 15, Fig. 1, rotatably supporting a printing cylinder 14, means for shifting the cylinder axis for skewing adjustment, a mounting plate 40, Fig. 3, supporting one end of a forme inking roller 26 and pivoted for swing- ing movement about the axis of an inking drum 23 co-operating with the roller 26, a reference ring 75, Fig. 3, mounted at one end of the cylinder 14 in coaxial relationship therewith in all skew positions thereof, and means for maintaining the plate 40 in engagement with the ring 75 so that the roller 26 follows the cylinder 14 over its range of skew adjustment. Rotary printing machines.-The press, Fig. 1, is of the offset perfecting type, the cylinder 14 engaging an offset roller 12 which co-operates with one side of a web W. The other side of the web is simultaneously engaged by an offset roller 11 which co-operates with a second printing cylinder 13. A similar offset perfecting couple adapted to print in a different colour is located upstream or downstream of the unit shown. Cylinder tripping and adjustment.-The plate cylinders and offset rollers are mounted in eccentric bushings. One end of the cylinder 14 is provided with a bearing (35), Fig. 2, mounted in an eccentric bushing (36) and this bushing is rotated to skew the cylinder in order to obtain correct registration by rotating a hand wheel 61 and moving a rod 62 axially. The other end of the cylinder is similarly mounted and is locked in position when all the press members have been aligned. The cylinder 14 may be adjusted axially by rotating a motor (157) in the selected direction so as to move the bushing (36) axially by means of a worm (156) and a worm-wheel (155). Inking-apparatus.-Ink is supplied from a fountain 18 and a train 16 distributes the ink to two ink drums 23, 24. The drum 23 co-operates with two forme inking rollers 26, 27, and the drum 24 co-operates with two further forme inking rollers 29, 30. The mounting plates of all the forme inking rollers are biased into contact with the ring 75, which is the same diameter as the plates on the cylinder, by an adjustable spring such as 85, which bears against an arm such as 83, on the respective plate. Each forme inking roller is adjustable with respect to cooperating members by loosening a lock-nut such as (52), Fig. 4 (not shown), and operating a pair of screws such as 43, 44, Fig. 3. Each forme inking roller may be tripped as required by supplying pressure fluid to a cylinder 90 so as to rotate a shaft 93, Fig. 3, supporting a doubleacting eccentric 74. A fitting 72 is connected to the eccentric 74 for connecting the respective mounting plate with the spring biasing the arm against the ring 75. Damping-apparatus.-The cylinder 14 is supplied with water from a fountain 28 by a fountain roller 28a, a drum 31, and a formedamping roller 32. The roller 32 is mounted in a manner similar to the forme inking rollers, a mounting plate 140, Fig. 3, being biased against the ring 75. The roller 32 is tripped by operating a cylinder 190, the roller being tripped at a different time to the forme inking rollers.
