Abstract

1,161,214. Washing-machines. PHILIPS ELECTRONICS & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 31 Aug., 1966, No. 38892/66. Heading D1A. A horizontal axis washing machine comprises a washing drum which is mounted on bearings lying in the plane of the associated end wall of the drum. A bearing housing 24 is fixed in an aperture in the washing tub and holds a ball bearing 29 and the inner races of the bearings hold shafts which are connected through cup-shaped shaft engaging members to the inside of the washing dram. The bearings are made watertight by plastics domes 35. The shaft 30 which is driven through a pulley 14 has a second ball bearing 28 mounted in the plane of the end' wall of the washing tub. The washing tub is surrounded by a metal casing and the washing unit is supported in the cabinet by springs and hydraulic dampers. Lifters are provided in the washing drum and the machine is loaded from the top, through a door in the peripheral wall of the drum. A water heater is provided and spin drying is performed the drive to the drum being through an expandable centrifugal pulley.
