1,159,963. Extruding foam particles with binder; laminated foam. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 July, 1966 [16 Aug., 1965], No. 34920/65. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Division C3] Fragments of polyurethane foam are wetted with phenol/formaldehyde mix which acts as a bonding agent, and which contains any necessary curing agent, and are compressed in a mould or by extrusion. The extrusion product is in the form of a board or block which may be faced by placing a material such as paper, plastic sheet, wood, asbestos, roofing felt &c. in contact with the resin as curing takes place. In the example, scrap polyurethane foam is fragmented by a rotary cutter, the crumbs then fall into a rotating barrel where they are tumbled and wetted by spraying with phenol/ formaldehyde resin mix. The wetted crumbs then pass through a rotating spiral and are extruded, between flexible facing material, and at the same time passed through a heating zone to cure the resin. The compression of the wetted fragments may be carried out in a mould.
