Abstract
1,159,757. Electro erosion. MONSANTO CO. 23 May, 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 23970/67. Heading B3V. In an electro-erosion process, oxygen or a gas containing free oxygen is supplied to the erosion gap. The invention is of particular use in forming various shaped apertures, Fig. 4 (not shown) in a stainless steel or titanium workpiece 9 to be used as a spinneret. This workpiece is supported on a table 10 adjustable horizontally in all directions by means 10a. The electrode comprises a wire 2 of molybdenum, nickel alloy or tungsten, passing over insulated pulleys 2, 3 and connected through spring 5 to a fixed point 6 and also to an eccentric pin 7 on driven wheel 8. Pin 7 is also connected through spring 11 to fixed point 6. Due to the rotation of pin 7, the wire electrode is reciprocated between the two pulleys, A D.C. supply, such as a primary cell, D.C. generator, or A.C. source with a rectifier, is connected to the point 6 and to the workpiece. The latter has a pilot hole for receiving the wire and the shape of the aperture is determined by a template 13 or by a pantograph mechanism. Oxygen or a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen is supplied to the gap through tube 12. In another embodiment, Fig 2 (not shown) the pulleys are of metal and are connected to the negative side of the D.C. source. Oxygen gas is supplied to a housing (14), (17) enclosing the erosion gap. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the oxygen gas is supplied through separate tubes to both sides of the workpiece. Specific examples are given for machining with different percentages and quantities of oxygen.
