Abstract

1,159,663. Medicament injectors. R. W. OGLE. 20 July, 1966 [23 July, 1965; 19 May, 1966], No. 32689/66. Heading A5R. A medicament injector comprises a cylindrical vial 20 which is closed by a resilient plug 25 having a plurality of rings 30, 31, 32 engaging the wall of the vial with a press fit, and a cylindrical member having one closed end 38 from which a needle 41 having a sharpened inward end 42 extends both inwardly and outwardly, the plug 25 and the cylindrical member each being provided with cooperating interlocking means 28, 37 whereby, upon initially interlocking the plug with the cylindrical member, the vial is held in an assembled but non-operating position and, upon further and fully interlocking the plug with the member, the plug is adapted to be pierced by the sharpened end of the needle so that the needle communicates with the interior of the vial and the plug is locked .securely to the cylindrical member permitting both aspiration and the expulsion of the contents of the vial. As shown, the cylindrical member 34 is formed within a cylindrical glass or plastics holder 33 and has threads 37 engaging with threads 28 on the rubber plug 25, a bore 26 and a thin wall 53 in the plug allowing the needle to reach the medicament 44 when the glass or plastics vial with the plug are rotated relative to the holder 33. The medicament 44 is then expelled for injection by pressing the vial over the plug 25 up into the holder. A two part housing (Figures 1, 2, not shown) may be provided and has internal ribs (49) and a shoulder (47) to support the injector in a sterile condition. In an alternative embodiment (Figure 4, not shown), the sharpened end 42 of the needle, before use, fits into a bore (70) in the adjacent end of the plug and the provision of a needle cover for the exposed part of the needle allows the two part housing to the dispensed with. A further embodiment (Figures 5-9, not shown) is provided with teeth (180) on the plug which engage with teeth (190) on the lower edge of the cylindrical member (134) and allow the plug and cylindrical member to be rotated relative to the vial so as to break any seizure or bind between the plug and vial. In a final embodiment (Figure 10, not shown), the cylindrical holder 33 surrounding the cylindrical member (334) is omitted and flanges (335) on the cylindrical member aid handling.
