Abstract
1,159,105. Thermionic cathode constructions. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Nov., 1966 [16 Nov., 1965],No. 50690/66. Heading H1D. A thermionic cathode for use in an electric discharge tube comprises a thin walled barrier member 1 having a high thermal resistance which serves as part of the cathode support structure and as current carrier and a current bridge 10 connected in parallel with the barrier having a cross-section greater than that of the barrier. A cathode comprises a meshed grid of thorium plated tungsten 4 supported by a central current supply rod 6 and a cylindrical thin walled heat barrier 1 bridged by four current carrying strips 10. Another cathode comprises a cylindrical emissive surface heated by two wires wound on a ceramic cylinder in a manner such that their magnetic fields compensate to reduce hum. Alternatively the emissive surface may be mounted on the hood 5 and be heated by a filament below on a flat ceramic plate supported by the rod 6. The bridges may be connected to the heater wires with the upper ends spaced from the heat barrier.
