Abstract

115,909. Thompson, W. P., (Elmore, G. H.). May 26, 1917. Strainer separators; baskets or drums; charging and feeding.-A centrifugal dryer comprises a rotatable conical screen with its smaller end upwards, and a conveyer rotor mounted to rotate oo-axially with the screen in the same direction and at a slightly different speed and having a number of quick-pitch helical conveyer blades, the angle of flare of the screen and its normal speed of rotation being so co-ordinated that the mass of material undergoing treatment is balanced between the centrifugal and gravitational forces and the downward feed is controlled by the relative movement between the conveyer and screen. The screen rotor consists of a casting comprising two rings 36, 33, connected by bars 37, between which are secured, by yokes 44 and bolts 45, the removable sections 40 of the screen, each comprising a frame of bronze with cross-bars 41 having a backing of perforated bronze, and a layer of heavy wire or other straining-media may be used suitable for the material being operated on. The ring 33, which has deflecting ribs 34, 35 and has a greater angle of flare than the upper part of the screen rotor, is connected by a spider comprising spoke members 32 and a deflecting- ring 38 with a hub 31 keyed to the shaft 18 and further secured by a split collar 30. The conveyer rotor consists of a ball-shaped member 47, which is keyed to a sleeve 20 and further secured by a collar 48, and is provided at its upper end with stirrer arms 49 and helical distributor blades 50, and on its surface in proximity to the screen with conveyer blades 51 in the form of quick-pitch helices. The parts are housed in a cylindrical casting 1 having a water duct 2 and discharge guide-plate 5 and closed by an annular plate 9, on which is secured the feed-hopper 10. The shaft 18 is mounted at its lower end in a bearing 7 integral with the casting 1, and at its upper end in a bearing 16 formed in a casing 14 mounted on a tripod 11. The sleeve 20 is mounted in a suitable bearing in the lower part of the casing 14 and is connected with the shaft 18 through the gear-wheels 24 - - 27 and shaft 28.
