Abstract
1,158,913. Reshaping and sizing glass articles. RONOR A.G; 27 July, 1966 [18 Aug., 1965], No. 33826/66. Heading C1M. To accurately size or condition the outer surfaces on preformed glass bodies such as conical ends 9 of glass tubes, the end 9 is inserted so that its outer surface is in contact with the moulding surface of a metal mould 1 and together they are cooled from a temperature between the transformation and working ranges of the glass to a temperature within or below the transformation range. As shown, the mould 1 is formed as an extension of a tube 2 secured to a base plate 3 over a corresponding aperture. The mould 1 is uniformly heated by a coil 4, but non-regular heating such as a single coil may be used where a stress zone is to be produced, e.g. as at a predetermined breaking point. A heat probe 6 is positioned to check the temperature of the mould, and may be used for automatic control of the operations. To accelerate cooling, an annular duct 7 has openings for directing air on to the mould and additional cooling air may be introduced through the base plate 3 for hollow open-ended bodies.
