[Also in Division C5] Heat is transferred from a hot region of a fixed catalyst bed of particulate material to a relatively cooler upstream region by means of a heat transfer fluid circulating in tubes embedded in the catalyst bed or in a jacket surrounding the bed or by means of rods of metal of high thermal conductivity placed longitudinallly within the bed. Pumping means 18 for effecting circulation may be provided together with an expansion vessel 19. Gases containing methane are produced by continually passing a heated mixture of a predominantly paraffinic hydrocarbon feed stock and steam through the catalyst bed.
