Abstract

1,157,925. Monovalent magnesium compounds. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 11 May, 1967 [27 June, 1966], No. 28602/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C3] A monovalent magnesium compound is prepared by thermally decomposing an alkyl magnesium halide at elevated temperature and reduced pressure. The preferred alkyl magnesium halides are C 2 H 5 MgCl, C 2 H 5 MgBr, n-C 3 H 7 MgCI, iso-C 3 H 7 MgBr, n-C 4 H 9 MgCl, iso-C 4 H 9 Mg Br, and n-C 4 H 9 MgBr. The decomposition is preferably effected at 200-350‹ C., at a pressure of 0À1-5 mm. Hg absolute, and is advantageously completed by pyrolysis at 300-350‹ C. under vacuum. The product is a monohalide, and may be used as a component in a polymerization catalyst (see Division C3).
