Abstract
1,156,458. Boots &c. ARTIGO S.p.A. 12 March, 1968 [13 March, 1967], No. 11897/68. Heading A3B. A composite shoe bottom, particularly for light footwear, e.g. slippers, consists of an outer shell component 1 formed of flexible and impermeable sheet material, e.g. leather or plastic coated fabric, and having apertures 9, 10; a tread sole 2 and heel tread 3 of wear resistant material e.g. natural or synthetic rubber or synthetic resin, which project through the apertures 9, 10 and which are held in place by flanges 11, 12; a filling 4 of sponge elastic material, e.g. cellular polyurethane, which is bonded to the shell 1 and treads 2, 3; and an insole 5 which is bonded to the filling 4, the depth of the filling 4 being less than the depth of the shell 1 to leave a margin 6 of the shell by means of which the shoe bottom can be attached to the upper, e.g. by stitching, adhesive or heat sealing. The unit is made by moulding the sole and heel treads 2, 3; cutting a blank for the shell 1 and cutting apertures 9, 10 in the blank; placing the treads 2, 3 in the apertures 9, 10 in the blank; placing the blank and treads 2, 3 in a mould; pouring into the mould a liquid mixture capable of reacting to form elastic cellular polyurethane; placing an insole 5 over the mixture and closing the mould; allowing or causing the mixture to react in situ to form the filling 5 and mould the blank to the shape of the mould; and opening the mould and removing the finished sole therefrom.
