Abstract
1,156,351. Welding by fusion. G.K.N. GROUP SERVICES Ltd. 24 June, 1966 [7 July, 1965], No. 28717/65. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] In multi-pass welding creep-resistant ferritic steel members of thickness approximately ¢ inch or greater with a weld metal of ferritic steel the weld metal is so chosen and the temperature and duration are so controlled that during deposition all the deposited weld metal is maintained austenitic and subsequently the deposit has a bainitic or intermediate transformation structure. Members, e.g. 2¢ inches thick, 12 inch diameter pipes of either of the following compositions 1 2 C 0À06-0À15% 0À7% max. Cr 0À25-0À6% 2-2À5% Mo 0À5-0À7% 0À8-1À25% Si 0À1-0À3% 1% max. Mn 0À4 -0À7% 0À25-1% V 0À02-0À3% - Fe balance are welded with a weld metal of the following composition C 0À05 -0À4% Mn 0À25-1% Si 0À1 -1% Cr 1À5 -5% Mo 0À5 -1À5% Ni 0À25-1% V 0À1 -1% B 0À001-0À01% Ti 0 -0À5% Fe balance by preheating at 350-600‹ C., preferably 500‹ C., welding with a carbon dioxide shielded arc and if necessary providing auxiliary heating of the weld and adjacent parts to maintain the weld austenitic, and when the last pass is completed controlling the cooling, e.g. by reducing the auxiliary heating or by forced air cooling, to produce the required bainitic or intermediate transformation structure. The weld is then tempered at 600-700‹ C. for at least 4 hours. Other welding methods such as submerged arc and flame welding may be used.
