Abstract

1,155,904. Foamable styrene-polymer beads. REXALL DRUG & CHEMICAL CO. 18 May, 1967 [19 May, 1966; 23 May, 1966], No. 23232/67. Headings C3C and C3P. Foamable styrene polymer beads are made by (a) suspending the polymer beads in an aqueous solution containing an organic suspending agent, which comprises hydroxyethyl cellulose in combination with one or more sodium salts of condensed aryl sulphonic acids, (b) adding to the suspension a hydrocarbon blowing agent boiling between -10‹ C. and 100‹ C., (c) maintaining the suspension between 40‹ and 150‹ C. for 1 to 10 hours to produce beads impregnated with 1 to 20% by weight of the blowing agent, (d) cooling the suspension, (e) separating the impregnated beads from the suspension. Preferably, the suspension of beads is contained in a suspension zone and is heated to between 80‹ and 120‹ C. Pentane is added at a rate sufficient to vaporize it in a space above the liquid suspension phase and the suspension continuously agitated at 80‹ C. and 1-3À5 atmospheres to 120‹ C. and 1-9 atmospheres for 1-10 hours. The suspension is cooled to between 20‹ and 60‹ C. and the impregnated beads separated, washed and dried and finally recovered in a free-flowing form. The styrene polymer may be a homopolymer or copolymer or a blend of styrene polymer with a styrene-butadiene copolymer. Blowing agents include butane, petroleum ether, cyclohexane, cyclopentadiene or mixtures of these.
