Abstract

1,154,893. Disc brakes. ALFRED TEVES G.m.b.H. 11 July, 1966 [27 Nov., 1965], No. 30982/66. Heading F2E. In a cam-operated disc brake, automatic wear-adjustment is provided by an adjuster 10 of screw-and-nut type through which the cam 9 acts on the backing-plate 21 of movable pad 5, the adjuster comprising an internally threaded sleeve 10 formed with a ratchet-wheel 17 which is engaged by a pawl 13<SP>11</SP> formed on a lever 13 pivoted on the axis 7 of the cam 9. The cam 9, which engages in a slot in the end of a screw 11 engaged in the sleeve 10, is integral with a lever 8 whose end 8<SP>1</SP> is connected to applying means (not shown). Lost-motion is provided between lever 8 and the lever 13 by a pin-and-slot connection 14, 15 whereby, after the clearance S has been taken up during the applying stroke of lever 8, the two levers move together and, if wear of the pads 4, 5 becomes excessive, causes pawl 13<SP>11</SP> to slip a tooth of the wheel 17 so that take-up is effected by rotation of wheel 17 by the pawl 13<SP>11</SP> during the return stroke of lever 8, return of the lever 13 to a defined position reestablishing the clearance S being effected by a spring 25. The brake comprises an axially floating disc 2, the pad 4 being fixed, and there is included a self-servo arrangement comprising a ball 23 positioned between a slack-adjusting screw 18, which is coupled to the sleeve 10 by a toothed rim 20 engaging the rim 17, and an inclined recess in the backing-plate 21. Adjustment of the ball 23 is thus effected simultaneously with adjustment of the applying means for pad wear. The pad backing-plate 21 is resiliently supported by a strip 26 which both cushions the pad against circumferential movement and also assists release of the brake. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the self-servo arrangement is omitted, and the cam (32) acts through an adjusting screw (33) which is rotatable by pawl (44) and is threadedly engaged in one end of a two-armed lever (35) the other end of which is coupled by a thrust pin (36) to the backing-plate (37) of the movable pad. The pawl (44) is formed on a lever which functions as the lever 13 of Fig. 1. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a pair of movable pads are engaged with an axially fixed disc by similar cam mechanism acting through a pair of screw adjusters and a pair of two-armed levers, the adjusters being operable by separate cams (54, 55) formed on a common lever functioning in the manner of the lever 13 of Fig. 1. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,053,930.
