Abstract
1,154,638. Pelleted LiF. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 2 Oct., 1967 [15 Nov., 1966], No. 44754/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C4] In preparing a thermoluminescent dosimeter LiF powder is compressed in the presence of sodium silicate solution to form a pellet, which has a density of about 2-2 gms/cm.<SP>3</SP> and a thickness of 0-025 inch. In the example, 50 mg. of LiF is mixed with 8-20 mg. of aqueous sodium silicate solution, the LiF having a density of 1À3-1À5 gm/cm.<SP>3</SP> and a particle size greater than 0-074 mm. and less than 0-147 mm. The mixture is then pressed in a die under a pressure of 18,000-23,000 p.s.i., removed therefrom and heated for 1 hour at 400‹ C., cooled rapidly, placed on a metal strip and heated to 80‹ C. for 20-24 hours. Preferably the LiF contains impurities e.g. 10-100 ppm Mg, and 0À01% by weight Ca and traces of Al, Fe, Ti and Si. In discussing the prior art, the Specification refers to using polytetrafluorethylene as a binder for LiF and also refers to U.S. Patent Specification 3,243,590 in which a potassium silicate binder is used.
