Abstract

1,154,460. Puffing tobacco stems. PHILIP MORRIS Inc. 7 Dec., 1966 [17 Dec., 1965], No. 54736/66. Heading A2C. Tobacco stems having a moisture content of from 4% to 23% by weight are puffed by exposure to a source of radiant heat energy for from 10 seconds to 20 minutes. Suitable radiant sources include quartz lamps, infra red lamps, muffle furnaces, hot plates and liquid heat exchangers. The puffing may be effected at below or above atmospheric pressure and the process may be continuous or batchwise.
