Abstract

1,154,258. Ships carrying liquified gases. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd. 4 Oct., 1967, No. 45121/67. Heading B7A. [Also in Division F4] A prismatic or cylindrical non-self-supporting fluid-tight flexible metal membrane tank 6, Fig. 1, for storing liquefied gas, e.g. methane is supported against internal loads by a surrounding solid thermally insulated material 5 which itself lines a rigid supporting shell, e.g. the inner hull 2, deck 3 and bulkheads 4, Fig. 2, of a marine tanker, and the membrane tank 6 is anchored against overall dimensional changes solely by members 17 which extend along the junction of adjacent side, top and bottom walls and referred to as corners and which members 17 are rigidly secured to the corners of the solid insulation material. The latter comprises balsa wood panels 8 faced with plywood 10, 11 and secured by timbers 7 to the outer rigid support members 2, 3, 4. Each anchoring member 17 comprises a resin-filled segmental metal tube as described in U.K. Specification 1,110,366 and is received in hardwood keyway members 21 inserted between hardwood blocks 18 adhesively secured to the panels 8. The membrane tank is formed with a series of expansion points 16.
