A machine for constructing a pneumatic tyre comprises an expansible tyre building drum and a device for positioning bead cores on fabric plies placed on the drum which comprises two frames shown as rings 13 each provided with hooks 39 having recesses 61 for reception of a bead core, each hook being spring-loaded and carried by a radially displaceable bolt 40. Each frame is mounted on a sleeve 7 axially slidable on a rod 3, each sleeve being provided with an arm 14 carrying two rollers which bear against opposite sides of a guide bar 4 which thereby prevents the frames from rotating about rod 3. Also mounted on rod 3 is an element 20 having an arm whose extremity 23 is mounted on a portion 25 of a rotatable spindle 24 and arms 30, 31 having tapped bores engaging right- and left-hand threaded portions 28a, 28b respectively of the spindle and projections 32, 33 carrying rubber buffers 34, 35 and limit switches 36, 37, the purpose of which is to automatically initiate expansion of the drum when the bead cores are correctly positioned. In use, bead cores are mounted in the hooks and the bead core positioning units 2, 2a are pushed inwards over the collapsed drum until arms 14 abut rubber buffers 34, 35, which are arranged so that the bead cores are positioned directly above grooves in the drum. The drum is then expanded radially with fabric plies thereon, the latter being forced into the grooves by the bead cores. When the hooks engage the plies, they are pressed outwards releasing the bead cores. The two rings 13 may then be moved outwards.
