The front of the boring head of a tunnelling shield comprises two or more unilinear, preferably helical, excavating blades 4, 5. Each blade has a radially extending, cutter carrying, leading digger edge 6 in the rotary sense of the motion of the head, the edge 6 being ahead in the sense of the direction of advance of the machine of the trailing edge 7 of the preceding blade in the rotational sense. The trailing edges 7 are provided with breaker bits.
