Abstract

1,153,444. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 27 Jan., 1967 [22 Feb., 1966], No. 7680/66. Heading G6C. A transverse bracing grid for a fuel element cluster consists of a group or groups of cells, each cell comprising two axially spaced annular members having resiliently flexible interconnecting limbs extending helically between them, the limbs being formed to provide protruberances extending radially inwardly of the cell for bearing resiliently on an element penetrating the cell, and the annular members of adjacent cells being peripherally contiguous. Each limb may have two convexities disposed one each side of its protruberance so as to provide resilient stops or pads to reduce transverse movement of the fuel elements during transport and handling. Where there are three limbs, two may be made less flexible than the other by increasing their width in order to provide more stable location of the fuel elements. The cells are formed either from stamped strip or from thinwalled tube.
