Abstract
1,153,370. Restraining patients. J. T. POSEY. 24 Aug., 1967 [23 Jan., 1967], No. 39007/67. Heading A5R. [Also in Division A3] For keeping a patient in bed, a restraining device comprises an elongated strap 10 adapted to be disposed across a bed, means for securing the ends of the strap to the bed, a first strip 22 secured at one end to an intermediate part of the strap 10, a second strip 24 secured at one end to an intermediate part of the strap 10 at a point spaced from where the first strip '22 is secured to the strap, means for fastening the two strips together so that they and the portion of the strap between them form a 'belt which fits around the waist of the patient, a first harness loop 16 secured at one end to one of the strips and at its other end to the strap, the first harness loop being of sufficient length to make a snug fit over one shoulder of the patient, and a second harness loop 18 secured at one end to one of the strips and at its other end to the strap, the second harness loop being of sufficient length to make a snug fit over the other shoulder of the patient. As illustrated, each end of strap 10 is adapted to be secured to the frame 30 of a bed 12 by a self-locking snap ring (20, Fig. 2, not shown). The free end of first strip 22 is adapted to be fastened to a buckle 26 carried by the free end of second strip 24. The free end of first harness loop 16 is stitched to the free end of second harness loop 18 to form a loop 27, through which the first strip 22 is passed, prior to fastening to the second strip 24, to secure the harness loops to the strips. The harness loops cross behind the back of the patient and are preferably secured together, for example by stitching, at their crossing point 28. The elongate strap 10, the strips 22, 24 and the harness loops 16, 18 are preferably all made of strong reinforced webbing.
