Abstract
1,153,164. Acrylonitrile polymer/pigment compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 Oct., 1967 [11 Nov., 1966], No. 50591/66. Addition to 978,242. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C4] A process for the mass pigmentation of polyacrylonitrile (i.e. a fibre-forming homo- or co-polymer of acrylonitrile) comprises mixing a solution of polyacrylonitrile with a solid pigment composition comprising a solid synthetic polymer which is soluble to the extent of at least 5% by weight in dimethyl-formamide and at least 60% by weight of organic or inorganic pigment, the volume concentration of pigment in the composition under a uniform compressive pressure of 20 p.s.i. being less than 18% in the case of an organic or inorganic pigment and less than 13% when carbon black. Copolymers of acrylonitrile with vinyl toluene and/or styrene are preferred as the solid synthetic polymer. The solid pigment compositions are obtained by intimately mixing (a) a pigment paste obtained by electrolytic flocculation of an aqueous dispersion, and (b) a polymer paste similarly obtained from a latex, and treating the mixture to soften and then reharden the polymer. In Examples 1-3, pigment compositions are made comprising (1) chlorinated copper phthalocyanine and a styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer latex, (2) the same pigment and a vinyl toluene/acrylonitrile copolymer latex, (3) carbon black and the latex of (2); these solids are readily dispersible in solutions of polyacrylonitrile in dimethyl formamide.
