Abstract

[Also in Division H1] In a method of fixing a first powder to a support using a photo-sensitized binder, which first powder is absorbent to the radiation to which the binder is sensitive, a solution of the photo-sensitive binder containing a second powder, which does not absorb the radiation and which is chemically convertible to the first powder by a process which does not produce gaseous products, is spread on the support, dried, exposed to the radiation so that selected areas are more easily removed by a solvent than other areas, those more soluble areas removed with the solvent and the second powder chemically converted into the first powder. This method may be used to apply the guard bands to the screen of an indexing-type colour television tube. The first powder which provides the guard bands may comprise any one or mixture of the oxides of Ni, Cu, Co, Me, Fe, Pb, Cr or any one or mixture of the sulphides of Ni, Cu, Pb. The second powder, which may comprise any of the oxalates of Ni, Co, Mn, the carbonates at basic carbonates of Ni, Cu, Co, Mn, Pb, Fe or the phosphates of Ni, Cu, Co, Fe, Pb, Cr, may be converted into the first powder by either chemical oxidation using, for example, potassium permanganate or rinsing with sulphide solution. The radiation preferably renders the photo-sensitized binder e.g. bi-chromated polyvinyl alcohol insoluble in the solvent and the chemical conversion preferably is effected after the soluble binder has been removed.
