Abstract

1,153,040. Aircraft fuel systems. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 14 June, 1966, No. 26546/66. Heading B7W. [Also in Division G3] An aircraft fuel system comprises a main fuel tank (not shown) and at least one auxiliary fuel tank 52a, 52b, 52c provided with means for controlling the amount of fuel received therein, the tanks being connected together by piping including a valve 76 operable to enable fuel to fill the main and auxiliary tanks together or the main tank alone, fuel to be transferred from one or more auxiliary tanks to the main tank, and fuel to be transferred from one auxiliary tank to another. In the embodiment described the aircraft is a helicopter, Fig. 1 (not shown), having a pair of main tanks disposed in sponsons located either side of the fuselage in which three auxiliary fuel tanks 52a, 52b, 52c are releasably installed. Each auxiliary tank is a self-contained unit comprising a vent line 72, a transfer line 80 including a conduit extending to the bottom of the tank to a fuel pump, and a pressure fueling line 92. To fill the tanks fuel is supplied through a fitting 42 and lines 44, 46 connected to the main tanks. If the auxiliary tanks also require filling the valve 76 is positioned, Fig. 9 (not shown), to direct fluid through lines 78, 92 into the tanks until valves (see Division F2) operate when a predetermined fuel level is reached to prevent further filling. When it is desired to transfer fuel from an auxiliary tank to a main tank the valve 76 is positioned to connect transfer line 80 to the line 68 and the pump within the auxiliary tank requiring emptying is started whereby fuel flows through the line 80, a tee-connection 94, and lines 77, 68 to the main tanks. For transfer of fuel from one auxiliary tank to another the valve 76 is moved to a third position, Fig. 7 (not shown), and the pump in the tank to be emptied is started.
