Abstract
1,152,021. Dehydrohalogenation process. PULLMAN Inc. 6 June, 1966 [30 Aug., 1965], No. 25191/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] A polyhalohydrocarbon having a saturated halohydrocarbon group and optionally hydroxyl substitution is dehydrohalogenated by reacting it at a temperature of at least 50‹ C. in the presence of an alumino-silicate catalyst having a pore size of at least 6A, the pores being formed by a 12-membered ring; and an inert diluent for the polyhalohydrocarbon having a molecular dimension larger than the pore opening of the catalyst and larger than a molecular dimension of the polyhalohydrocarbon. The reaction may be carried out at sub-atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure, in vapour or liquid phase, with the polyhalohydrocarbon diluted to between 10 and 50 mole per cent. Examples relate to dehydrohalogenation of 1,2-dichloro-ethane using Na and Ca faujasites and H-mordenite; of 1,1-dichloroethane using Na faujasite; and of 1,4 - dichlorobutane; 1,2 - dichloropropane; 1,1 - difluoroethane, 1,1,1 - trichloroethane, all using Na faujasite. Other polyhalohydrocarbons are mentioned. Acetaldehyde is produced as a by-product in the dehydrogenation of 1,1-difluoroethane.
