A stud welding machine comprises an actuator 60 serving to actuate a stud holder 12 to grip the stud 14 while the holder is moved toward the workpiece 16 by a resilient drive 22 and operable by inertia after the stud has engaged the workpiece to cause the holder to release the stud before rebound of the holder occurs. The actuator 60, which is slidably keyed to an adapter sleeve 30 and which has a weighted head 70, is provided with spring fingers 91, the tips 90 of which engage-in the studgripping position shown-portions 92 of a split collet 42 having four spring fingers 84 to urge the gripping surfaces 86 of the fingers 84 into tight engagement with the stud. As the holder 12 is moved rapidly towards the workpiece by the resilient drive 22, e.g. a pneumatic cylinder device, an arc is drawn between the tip 108 of the stud and the workpiece, welding current being derived from a capacitor 110. Upon impact of the stud on the workpiece the inertia of the actuator 60 causes it to slide downwardly, i.e. towards the workpiece, whereby the tips 90 of spring fingers 91 move to a position adjacent cylindrical portions 94 of the collet spring fingers 84, the diameter at portions 94 being less than at portions 92, whereby the fingers 84 spring open and release the stud before the holder 12 rebounds from the workpiece. An additional weight may be attached below the actuator head 70. The collet 42 is of phosphor bronze.
