Abstract

1,151,671. Hydrostatic transmissions. J. G. GILES. 4 Jan., 1968, No. 544/68. Headings F2C and F2D. A hydrostatic transmission consists of pump and motor units 10, 14 of the slipper-vane type, each comprising a rotor with integral radial arms 19 engaging arcuate slipper-vanes 20 mounted in a sleeve 16 movable between parallel guides 14 to vary the rotor eccentricity and displacement volume. The input shaft 1 drives a make-up pump 3 and is keyed to the main pump rotor 8 and passes concentrically through the fixed hollow motor shaft 2 keyed to the motor rotor 17, the pump and rotor casings 10, 14 being secured together and to the pump end plate 7 which drives the output shaft 11 directly or through pinions 39, 40. The eccentricity of sleeves 16 may be controlled by centrifugal weights 41 and the passages 31, 32 in the port plate 12 between the pump and motor may be controlled by a throttle valve (43), Fig. 3 (not shown), similarly operated by a centrifugal weight (44). When applied to a vehicle drive the pump displacement may be controlled by a hand lever 24, while the motor may be controlled automatically by a unit 33 responsive to engine speed or torque, or to throttle setting.
