Abstract
1,151,529. Tin oxide sol. M. & T. CHEMICALS Inc. 12 Aug., 1966 [19 Aug., 1965], No. 36189/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] A tin oxide sol is prepared by contacting an aqueous alkali metal stannate solution with a cation exchange material in its H or NH 4 form. The stannate is preferably a tin-plating bath solution, containing K, Na, or Li stannate at a concentration of 15 g./l. to saturation, and also containing 5-100 g./l. of a hydroxide of the same or different alkali metal. The sol is then used to replenish the tin in the bath. The process may be operated at 15-30‹ C. in batch or continuously, e.g. by passing the solution through a column of the exchanger at 1 ml./ cm.<SP>2</SP>/min. The cation exchange material may be a carboxylic type resin, e.g. prepared from acrylic, methacrylic, or ethacrylic acids, or a sulphonated material, e.g. sulphonated aromatic hydrocarbon polymers, coal, lignin, peat, or phenolic resins. Examples are those materials known by the trade marks "Amberlite", "Ionac", "Dowex", 'Nalcite", and "Zeocarb". The material may be regenerated by washing with HCl, H 2 SO 4 , sulphamic, formic, or acetic acid to give the H form; the NH 4 is then obtained by treating with NH 4 OH.
