Abstract
1,151,398. Sulphur. PINTSCH BAMAG A.G. 7 Sept., 1967 [7 Sept., 1966], No. 41030/67. Heading C1A. Sulphur is produced by reacting H 2 S with O 2 by the Claus process using either (a) excess O 2 so that the final gas contains only SO 2 , or (b) a deficiency of O 2 so that the final gas contains H 2 S which is then oxidized catalytically with O 2 to SO 2 ; the resultant gases are then mixed with O 2 and passed to an adsorption agent where SO 3 is formed and adsorbed; the charged adsorption agent is regenerated by heating; and the desorbed gases are recycled to the initial H 2 S/O 2 reaction. The adsorption agent may be activated carbon, semi-coke, or peat coke, or silica gel containing iron sulphate. The H 2 S and O 2 may be passed to a combustion vessel where S is deposited and SO 2 also formed, and the gases passed to a first catalytic reactor where H 2 S and SO 2 react to give further S, then through first and second heat exchangers to condense out S. The gases return through the first exchanger and are passed to a second catalytic reactor, then cooled to separate further S, mixed with O 2 or air, passed through the H 2 S/O 2 catalyst (if used), and then through the adsorption agent, which may be regenerated in a rotary kiln. The desorbed gases (SO 2 , SO 3 , and S) may be recycled to the combustion vessel or to the first or second catalytic reactors.
