Abstract
1,151,385. Separating oil and wax. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 24 Jan., 1968, No. 3688/68. Headings C5E and C5W. Mineral oil is separated from hydrocarbon wax in a process in which a solution of the oil and wax is chilled in several stages and the precipitated wax is filtered off, characterized in that a different dewaxing aid, to improve the filterability of the wax, is added before each precipitation. The mixture may be filtered after each stage or only after the final chilling. The dewaxing aid, used in an amount 0À1-1À0% by weight of the waxy oil feed, may be a condensation product of an aromatic hydrocarbon and a chlorinated paraffin wax, in the first stage of higher molecular weight than in the second stage, or it may first be (a) a C 18 , C 20 , C 22 , or C 24 polymethacrylate, (b) a C 18 , C 20 , C 22 or C 24 fumarate/ vinyl acetate copolymer, (c) a combination of C 18 , C 20 , C 22 or C 24 ester polymers or copolymers or (d) a polymer of esters of C 18 , C 20 , C 22 or C 24 alcohol mixtures, and then secondly (e) a C 4 - C 18 polymethacrylate, (f) an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, (g) a naphthalene-chlorinated paraffin wax condensate, or (h) a polystyrene alkylated with n-C 16 olefins. Conventional oil-wax solvents are used, e.g. light paraffins, ketones, alcohols, chlorinated paraffins, and aromatics; hexane is exemplified.
