A plant for the preparation of catalogues for mailing includes means for feeding folders and enclosures to at least one assembling machine which forms units each consisting of a folder 64, Fig. 2, containing at least one enclosure 61, and means for feeding the units, catalogues and address slips to at least one inserting machine which inserts the units into the catalogues and provides each catalogue with an address slip. In the embodiment described, enclosures from supply devices 1-4 are fed in containers via rollerways 9-12, an endless conveyer 13 and rollerways 14, 15 to the assembling machines 16, 17, where enclosures 61-63, Fig. 2, are successively inserted into the folded enclosure 64 to form the unit. The units so formed are fed in containers via conveyer belts 20 and 24 to the inserting machines 25, 26 where a single unit from piles (64<SP>1</SP>) and (64<SP>11</SP>), (Fig. 3, not shown) is inserted into a catalogue (66), into which an address slip (67) is also inserted and folded over to lie on top of the catalogue. Single enclosures such as single sheets or separately bound supplementary catalogues fed to the inserting machines from paths 40 and 41 may also be simultaneously inserted into the catalogue. The catalogues are then pushed into a tube formed from a transparent foil or a foil having windows through which the address slips are visible, the tube being transversely welded and severed to form individual packages (70), (Fig. 4, not shown), which are subsequently franked, stacked and tied into bundles. The catalogues may alternatively be enclosed in paper window envelopes. When the last address slip (67) of a group having a particular postal district is detected, the stacking mechanism is stopped and the stack ejected to the tying machine. Alternatively, visible indicators such as colour strips may be provided so that a stack seen to contain different coloured packages (70) may be ejected. The address slips may alternatively be marginally secured to the top of the catalogues and may have lines of perforations to facilitate their subsequent removal.
