Abstract
1,151,241. Controlling solidification in metal ingots. W. N. ROSSBOROUGH. 16 May, 1966 [20 May, 1965], No. 21663/66. Heading B3F. A process for treating molten metal within an ingot mould before it has completely solidified comprises applying a capping mixture constituted by particulate deoxidizing and chilling agents to and into the surface of the molten metal so as to form a crust over the surface thereof. The capping mixture may be one selected from a group consisting of (a) aluminium and ferro-manganese, (b) aluminium, calcium silicide and ferro-manganese, (c) aluminium, calcium silicide, ferro-manganese and a ferro-alloy, (d) aluminium, iron or a ferro-alloy.
