Abstract

1,151,134. Charging and discharging metal heating furnaces. FUEL FURNACES Ltd. 27 Dec., 1967 [28 Sept., 1966], No. 43339/66. Heading F4B. A continuous furnace for heating the ends of metal pins, rods &c. has a rotatable door 11 formed with an annular system of workpiecereceiving sleeves 13 each associated with a peripheral finger 12, a feed ram 38 pushing workpieces from a hopper 31 singly and in turn into a sleeve 13, and a discharge ram 39 pushing treated pins through into the furnace on to a discharge shoot 43 leading to an external table 45. The door is carried by a stub axle journalled in a bearing block 15 carried between horizontal beams 16, said axle also carrying a gear-wheel 18 meshing with a gear-wheel 19 on a shaft 20 supporting a rotary pocketed drum receiving the workpieces below the hopper 31. The drum feeds a die trough located in line with the sleeves 13 and is supported from the bearing block 15 by a bracket comprising plates 22, 23 and 25. The door is rotated in angular steps equal to the angular pitch of the fingers 12 by an electric motor 33 through reduction gearing 34 and a cam disc 35 with roller 36. The gearwheels 18 and 19 are so related that each of these angular steps causes a workpiece to be deposited in front of the ram 38 ready to be pushed into a sleeve 13. A striker on cam disc 35 operates hydraulic motors controlling rams 38 and 39 and limit switches on both motors ensure that the drive motor 33 cannot be restarted until both rams have performed their return stroke. The furnace is mounted on wheels on end horizontal girders 5 of a girder framework 2-5, and is heated by a burner extending through a port 42. A shoot 44 carries away workpieces accidentally pushed into the furnace by feed ram 38. The length of rams 38, 39 can be varied to suit the workpiece lengths.
