Abstract
1,150,778. Universal joints. LOHR & BROMKAMP G.m.b.H. 26 July, 1966 [27 July, 1965], No. 33502/66. Heading F2U. In a constant velocity ratio universal joint comprising torque transmitting, caged or free, balls 1 engaging axial arcuate grooves 2, 4, or intersecting points of straight inclined longitudinal grooves (12, 14) (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) of part-circular cross-section in a cylindrical outer member 3 and an inner member 15, the grooves 2, 4 of each pair are shaped to provide a compressive bias on the balls 1 tending to return the members 3, 15 to a central position as one member is moved axially in relation to the others, which total bias from all the balls increases with increased relative axial movement from the central position. As shown, and in Fig. 2 (not shown), this is achieved by offsetting the radius 7 or (6), (Fig. 2), of the inner, or outer, arcuate groove an amount a below, or above, the centre axis, whilst in Fig. 3 (not shown) straight inclined grooves are made slightly arcuate towards the ball on radii (6<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>1</SP>). Alternatively the ball bias may be effected by laterally offsetting the opposed grooves 2, 4 such that the grooves 2, 4 of a pair intersect one another. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the intersecting grooves, inclined tangentially or helically, are continuously modified to decrease uniformly to provide the ball biasing towards the central position.
