Abstract
1,149,821. Secondary cells. NIPPON STORAGE BATTERY MFG. CO. Ltd. 4 Jan., 1967 [3 Aug., 1966], No. 476/67. Heading H1B. A lead-acid secondary cell with a silica gel containing sulphuric acid as electrolyte has a cylindrical electrolyte container 1, inner (3) and outer (4) lids defining an annular gas space 11, a cylindrical porous member 14 with both ends turned in, the upper end 14a communicating with the gas space 11 and the lower end 14b with the atmosphere, an outer case 16, and an annular elastic valve 10 covering holes in an upward projection of the inner lid. When the pressure in a gas space below the inner lid reaches a predetermined value it opens valve 10 and the gas escapes into the annular space 11 and to the atmosphere via porous member 14 which may be impregnated with oil and serves to prevent the escape of water vapour. As shown the hexagonal cathode 21 is connected via conductor 6 and terminal 5 to the bottom plate 12. The anode 22 comprises an acidresistant porous tube 24 closed by plastics cover 26 containing lead peroxide and cruciform conductor 8. Porous member 14 is held in place by a thermally contracted plastics film 15 which is in turn surrounded by metallic case 16.
