Abstract

1,149,849. Trocars: catheters. BRUNSWICK CORP. 22 July, 1966 [28 July, 1965], No. 33181/66. Heading A5R. A trocar-catheter assembly comprises (a) a catheter tube 30 having a rigid non-distensible distal end portion, flexible mid and proximal end portions, and an interval wall surface throughout the tube, the distal end portion having a cylindrical portion and a truncated conical tip portion 32, an abutment 37 projecting inwardly from the internal wall surface of the cylindrical portion of the distal end portion and forming an opening of reduced cross-sectional area throughout the remaining portion of the distal end portion, and (b) a trocar 10 slidably and removably received within catheter tube 30 through said proximal end portion, the trocar having a shaft portion 11, and a reduced portion 12 terminating in a conical point 16, the reduced portion forming a shoulder 15 engageable with the abutment 37 in the cylindrical portion of the tube 30 when conical point 16 extends from the distal end opening of tube 30, the conical shape of point 16 matching the slope of truncated core tip 32 of the distal end portion of the catheter tube to provide a conical penetrating point for the trocarcatheter assembly, whereby pressure applied to the shaft portion 11 of the trocar will transmit force through the trocar to the coacting shoulder 15 and the abutment 37 to the rigid non-distensible distal end tube portion for leading the catheter into position. The trocar may have a groove 18 extending longitudinally from the point 16. The trocar may also have a measuring mark 21 thereon, which mark will be opposite the proximal end 34 of the catheter tube 30 when the tube and the trocar are assembled with the shoulder 15 of the trocar and the abutment 37 of the tube engaging each other. A line 40 of X-ray opaque material may extend the length of catheter tube 30, the line being interrupted by an aperture 41 in the wall of the tube. Another aperture 42 may also be formed in the wall of catheter tube 30. The trocar may have a handle 17 at its proximal end. The trocar-catheter assembly may be supplied in a sterile package, the package comprising (i) a container 50 closed at one end 51 and open at the other end 52 to receive the trocar with catheter tube assembled thereon, the size of the open end 52 relative to the size of the handle 17 being such as to limit insertion of the trocar into container 50, and (ii) a cap 54 for the container, which cap is closed at one end 55 and is slidable over the opened end 52 of the container to enclose the handle 17.
