Abstract

1,149,061. Change-speed planetary gears. EMERSON ELECTRIC CO. 15 April, 1966 [30 April, 1965; 18 March, 1966], No. 16747/66. Heading F2D. A two-speed gear for a washing machine comprises a two- or three-element epicyclic train having axially movable clutch means engageable to prevent relative rotation of two elements for direct drive, and means to hold one element against rotation for reduced drive. As shown in Fig. 2, a two-element train comprises a ring gear 85 fast on an output shaft 48 and a planetary pinion 80 having one less tooth than the ring gear and fast with a sleeve 76 which is rotatably mounted on a crank pin 70 fast with an input shaft 23 driven by an electric motor. The sleeve 76 is connected by a web 75 through axial pins which engage, with play permitting gyratory motion of the sleeve and pinion 80, in apertures in a clutch/brake ring 52. The ring 52 has coned clutch and brake surfaces engageable with correspondingly coned surfaces 35, 25 formed respectively on a member 30 slidably splined to the input shaft and on a stationary housing 44. A spring 90, reacting between the member 30 and the ring 52, urges the ring 52 into clutching engagement with the member 30 to thereby lock the train solid for direct drive. The member 30 is slid axially by electromagnetic or hydraulic means acting on a shifter fork 64, to first engage the ring 52 with the brake surface 25 and subsequently to release the ring from the clutch surface 35 so that the pinion 80 is held from rotation but permitted, by the play in the connection to the ring 52, to gyrate to give reduced drive. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) a three-element train has an input sun, an output carrier and a ring gear formed with clutch and brake surfaces for selectively clutching the ring gear to input for direct drive and stationing the ring gear for reduced drive. In a modification of this embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the ring gear is clutched to the output carrier for direct drive.
