Abstract
1,148,528. Forms of wood. G. W. WYNN. 26 Aug., 1966 [27 Aug., 1965], No. 37019/65. Heading B5L. An elongate sectional member comprises a series of spaced coplanar slits 4, Fig. 1, the plane of the slits being directed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the member. The member may be rectangular having one face twice as wide as the other with the slits midway between the narrow faces 6 which may be formed with grooves 8. Holes 10 extend between the grooves, alternate holes intersecting the slits and being formed with counterbores 12. Two sectional members can be joined together by sawing at right angles to and at the opposite ends of a slit to form openings 14, as shown in Fig. 2. The joints may be secured together by glue and a dowel passing through the holes in the exposed faces of the slits; alternatively, screws or bolts may be used. The sectional members may have 1, T, X or, as shown in Fig. 5, angle cross-section. The slits and holes may not penetrate both faces of the members but may be blind, or may extend from both faces but not join at the middle. Hinges or catches may be received in the holes or the holes may receive the pegs 32, 34, Fig. 7, of angle members 30 for effecting a T-joint between two members. Mitred joints between members can be effected by an angled dowel which engages one hole in each member. In another embodiment, the member is laminated having an inner lamination 44, Fig. 10, between outer laminations 46, the slits 4 not extending to the outer faces of the member. Alternatively, the slits may be formed at the interfaces of the laminations by not applying adhesive where the slits are to occur. In a further embodiment, the axes of the holes lies in the plane of the slits or parallel to such plane. In yet another embodiment, the member is formed with pairs of parallel slits 58, Fig. 13, adjacent a semi-circular raised region 56 of the grooves 8 in the narrow faces. Holes 10 are located adjacent and parallel to the ends of the slits and when bored out to intersect the slits form slots 60. Cuts from the outer surfaces of the member to the slits produce tongues 62. In a similar embodiment, the member has a pair of grooves in each narrow face, each groove having a semi-circular raised portion and aligned pairs of slits.
