Abstract

1,148,542. Sharpening machine cutters in situ. TURNER MACHINERY Ltd. 3 Feb., 1967 [26 Feb., 1966], No. 8547/66. Heading B3D. [Also in Division C6] A machine, Figs. 1 and 2, for surface-processing, e.g. fleshing or shaving, sheet material 21, such as hide, skin or leather, comprises a spirally-bladed, cylindrical working tool 7 and a blade-sharpening assembly 22 having a travelling, endless, abrasive belt 44, which can be moved, by mechanism (hereinafter described) actuated by the turning of a hand wheel 41, into or out of contact with the edge of each blade 11 of the tool 7. Preferably, one half of the tool 7 carries multi-start spiral blades 11, and the other half carries similar, oppositely inclined blades. The tool 7 is rotated, in the direction B, by an electric motor 10 acting through a pulley-belt transmission 9. The belt 44 passes around a driving and pressing wheel 42 and a tensioning wheel 43. The wheel 42 is mounted on the shaft 45 of a variablespeed electric motor 54. The linear speed of the belt 44 preferably exceeds that of the edge of each blade. The wheel 42 is preferably covered with elastic material such as rubber, which may be smooth, serrated or ribbed. The position of the tensioning wheel 43 can be altered by the turning of a hand screw 53. The belt 44 may be wide enough to extend over the whole length of the tool 7. Preferably, as shown, the belt 44 is narrow and the blade-sharpening assembly 22 is mounted on a carriage 23, which can be reciprocated, to and fro in a slide 32, along the tool 7, as by a reversible hydraulic motor 30 rotating a screw 28 passing engagingly through a nut 27 secured to the carriage, or by a doubleacting hydraulic ram, or by reversible rack and pinion mechanism. The lower threaded portion of a shaft 34 passes engagingly through a threaded lug 33 on the slide. The upper, unthreaded portion of the shaft 34 carries a wormwheel 35, which engages a worm 36 slidably keyed on a rotatable splined rod 38 carrying a sprocket 39, which is connected by an endless chain 40 to a sprocket on the shaft of the hand wheel 41.
