Abstract
1,147,670. Ion sources; cathode constructions. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. 15 Dec., 1966 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 56148/66. Heading H1D. [Also in Division F1] A directly-heated cathode providing electrons for bombarding a gas within a plasma discharge device, such as a space propulsion ion engine, to produce ions comprises a metal sheet or mesh 16 coated with electron emitting material and folded into a multiply convoluted configuration, e.g. as shown. Aluminium oxide posts 21, 23 are held within the bends of the convolutions and the cathode structure is supported by aluminium oxide insulators 20, 22, 24, 26 within a heat shield cup 10. The spaces between the folds of the convolutions are wider than the plasma sheath so that the gas plasma may penetrate the folds. The convolution pattern may be completely closed, Fig. 4 (not shown) with the heater leads contacting the cathode at opposite sides so that the heater current divides and flows through the two halves of the cathode. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown) the cathode is sinuous or meandrous and has flat, rectangular convolutions.
